I always acknowledge designer signed pieces and pay the appropriate premium over market value. Generally speaking, the lighter weight of the item, the higher premium over the market value you will receive. Heavy gold pieces may only be worth a couple of percentage points above the market price. However, a small pair of Tiffany & Co. gold hoop earrings will be at least 150% of the market price!
Certain brands have enormous premiums. For instance, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier gold jewelry can bring 200% to 500% or more of gold market value! Other less prestigious designers will be from 110% to 125%, such as John Hardy and David Yurman.
